Fun Science of Reading Tips for Families

At Just Right Reader, we believe that families play an important role in their children’s literacy journey. When families prioritize reading at home, it becomes a joyful part of daily life.

Your child’s Just Right Reader Science of ReadingTake-Everywhere Literacy Pack™ is a powerful tool to support their reading development!

Here are some fun tips for putting the Science of Reading into action and making the most of these books to help your child thrive as a reader!

Start by scanning the QR code on each book.

This will take you to a 2-minute phonics video lesson in English, Spanish, and many more languages! Each video reinforces the phonics skills your child is learning, making practice fun and interactive.

2. High Five Reading Practice

Reading is a skill that gets stronger with practice—just like any other activity!

Encourage your child to read and reread their books. Start by reading one book together, then explore the rest of the pack at your own pace—whether it’s one book a day or more! Once you’ve finished, revisit the books from the beginning to reinforce their skills and keep the fun going!

After reading, color in the High Five Reading chart at the back of the book to celebrate their progress.

3. Write, Write, Write!

Reading and writing go hand in hand. Each book includes a writing practice section on the last page.

Encourage your child to write the words they’ve read and add more from the decodable word list to strengthen their writing skills.

BONUS: Can they write about their favorite part of the story?

3 Bonus Tips for Family Reading Time

  1. Create a Read-Together Routine:  Set aside time to read together, even if it’s just a few minutes before bed. This strengthens reading skills and creates special bonding moments.

  2. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge small victories! Specific praise boosts confidence and motivation, whether it’s finishing a book or sounding out new words.

  3. Be a Reading Role Model: Children often mimic what they see, so let them see you enjoying reading too—whether it’s a book, a magazine, or a recipe. Your enthusiasm will inspire them!

Together, We Can Foster a Lifelong Love of Reading!

With these Science of Reading tips, you’ll help your child grow into a stronger, more confident reader.

Remember to bring your child’s Just Right Reader backpack and books on outings for extra reading fun!

Happy reading!
