Rachel Rothman-Perkins

Hello from New Jersey! I’m Rachel, and I live in Jersey City, NJ with my husband, Don. I’ve worked with many young readers and writers and their teachers, first as a classroom teacher in San Jose, California and then as a Staff Developer for the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project in New York City. I earned a graduate degree in literacy education and equity from San Jose State University in addition to writing curriculum for Kindergarten and First Grade learners. I strive to be an educator who makes literacy learning playful, meaningful, collaborative, and empowering. I believe that when we teach children about the power and strengths they have as readers, writers, and young people, they are developing literacy and life skills they can take with them as they grow. I love to bike, do yoga, explore new places, read, and spend time connecting with family, friends, and colleagues.

Sara Rich

Hello, from California! I’m Sara, and I live in San Francisco with my husband Aaron and our two kids, Izzie (8) and Zack (5). I started Just Right Reader to support kids everywhere to learn to read and write and love it. After being a principal for over 20 years, I wanted to make it easy for parents to find rock star reading teachers and the books to help their kids learn to read and keep reading in English and Spanish! As a turnaround principal and a San Francisco Principal of the Year, I know what makes a great teacher and those are the people we hire to teach your child. After Penn, I started my teaching career in New York City with Teach for America and then became a principal in dual immersion and general education schools. You might see me running the hills of San Francisco or hiking with my kids. Can’t wait to read with you and your family!

Annie

Hello from Thailand! I’m Annie, and I teach kindergarten at an international school outside of Bangkok. I live here with my husband (Nico), 9 year-old son (Vaughn), two cats, and two dogs. Education is my total passion, and I wouldn’t want to have a job in any other field. I have been a teacher for about 18 years...first in Japan, then in California (I’m a Bay Area native), followed by Georgia, and now, in Thailand. I’ve taught all grades K-5 and love that I’ve had the opportunity to work with students across several developmental stages. I am constantly working on my practice of teaching with a whole-child, child-centered focus, and I believe strongly in teaching about the power of literacy within identity-building and social justice work. I love nature, yoga, Pilates, reading, writing, traveling, wandering, and connecting with people.

Sarah Rokhsar

Hello from New York! My name is Sarah and I live in New York City. I love teaching readers and writers and have been teaching for over 10 years. I specialize in teaching students with special needs. I taught kindergarten, first, second and third grade in various settings in an urban community school. Furthermore, I acted as a teacher mentor and coach. I have my Bachelor’s Degree in Childhood Education, and have my Masters in Special Education. Later I went on to Columbia University’s Teachers College to earn another Master’s in Education as a Literacy Specialist. I am incredibly passionate about working with students to develop their growth mindsets and helping them to find joy in learning. I believe that all students have the ability to grow and achieve as long as they have teachers that truly listen to them and dedicate time to foster relationships with them. I think that students (no matter what age) have the ability to voice their opinions and advocate for their needs as learners. When I am not teaching, you may find me running the streets of New York City. I love to run races like 5Ks or even marathons. I also used to compete in obstacle course races such as Spartans and Tough Mudders. When I’m not running, I spend time with my family and friends. magna aliqua. Catherine Maddox

Hello from Texas! My name is Catherine and I recently moved from NYC to Texas! I began my teaching career in Charlotte, North Carolina and taught 1st grade for almost a decade, where I fell in love with early literacy instruction. From there, I moved to New York to pursue a Masters in Literacy from Teachers College at Columbia University. Through my time in that program and a rewarding internship with TCRWP, I was able to further develop my thinking and practices in teaching young children to read and write. Following my graduate program, I took a position at a school in Brooklyn where I taught in primary (K-2) classrooms for two years and then went on to become the literacy coordinator at that school for the last 4 years. Having recently gotten engaged, I left New York and now live in Amarillo, Texas where I am excited to begin this new opportunity of bringing my love of literacy into the lives of budding readers and writers all over the country. My additional passions include discovering great restaurants, books I can’t put down, travels to see family & friends, cooking with my fiance, a good glass of wine, and choosing the perfect playlist for any occasion...
