Supporting English Language Learners in Cincinnati Public Schools

Local12 News recently wrote an article highlighting Cincinnati Public Schools taking a proactive approach to support families in the district by bringing literacy education directly into their homes with Just Right Reader decodable books. As part of an initiative to continue promoting literacy during the summer, more than 2,000 families with children in Pre-K to second grade will receive a backpack filled with 30 Just Right Reader decodable books. This program aims to provide additional support to the youngest learners and encourage family reading time. Superintendent Iranette Wright expressed the district’s commitment, stating,

“For our earliest learners, we want to go to their homes. We want to make sure they are getting some additional support for the summer and also encourage some time for families to read together.”

By offering decodables in both Spanish and English, Just Right Reader provides extra support for English Language Learner (ELL) families and fosters a stronger sense of community within the district.

The collaboration between CPS classrooms and Just Right Reader is grounded in the Science of Reading. Both entities recognize the importance of evidence-based approaches to literacy instruction. CPS endeavors to bring families together, promote language development, and cultivate a love for reading among young children. Through initiatives like these, CPS is committed to empowering its students and building a solid foundation for lifelong learning.

To enhance the learning experience, every Just Right Reader decodable includes a QR code for caregivers and students to scan on their phones, easily accessing video phonics lessons in both Spanish and English.
