The Holidays are here!

Time to enjoy family and friends. It is also a great time to keep your kids reading. Here are my top 5 tips to keep kids reading over the break:

  • Make It Fun! The break should have some time for smiles and laughter. So let’s incorporate reading into the magic. Grab their favorite outfits (maybe that Halloween costume they loved so much) and let your kids read in it. Dressing silly or dressing up can really make reading fun. Pro Tip: Dress up like the characters in the book and turn it into a play!
  • Take advantage of the audience. Family coming over? Guests are a perfect audience for your child to read to. They will be so excited to show off their reading skills to their family and friends.
  • Need a minute? Or maybe ten?  Set a timer and grab your child’ favorite books. Timers can be a great incentive to decrease boredom and help students visualize time. Plus now you can finally make the cranberry sauce.
  • Give them a Reading Mission! Remember we want reading to feel fun and even like a game. Ask your child to go on a reading mission. This could be for them to find a certain sight word or count how many times they see a certain letter.
  • Add in some writing or drawing! It is amazing what great incentives a pen and paper can be for readers. After your child reads, ask them to write or draw about their favorite part of their books. Or even come up with a new ending! Maybe write a letter to tell a friend all about how awesome their book is.
